Laparoscopic or “minimally invasive” surgery is a specialized technique for performing surgery. This technique is used to perform surgical procedures with the assistance of a video camera and several thin instruments with a light source at the tip. In traditional “open” surgery the surgeon uses a single incision to enter into the abdomen. During laparoscopic surgery, small incisions of up to half an inch are made and plastic tubes called ports are placed through the incision. The surgical instruments are then introduced through the ports which allow access to the inside of the patient. Fiber optics carry images from a lens, also at the tip of the instrument, to a video monitor, which the surgeon can view. At the beginning of the procedure, the abdomen is inflated with carbon dioxide (CO2) to provide a working and viewing space for the surgeon. The gas is removed at the end of the procedure.
